Dear Mother

Just a few lines to say I am well and let you know how I am getting on. I suppose you will be wondering why I haven't written before. You will see by Charles letter in this envelope that I wrote it on the 6th and couldn't get it posted. Just after I finished it we moved up the line and only green envelopes & field cards can be sent out from there. I did have any of those so I had to wait. I haven't had a chance to. write to aunt June or any of my cousins in Scotland. I'll have a bit of writing to do when we get back out on rest again. I havent had any letters since Charles' one but I got a parcel on the night of the 10th they brought it up with the rations. I sure was glad to get it. Everything was in first class shape. It was the one wrape up in the Province. dated Aug 23rd. The candies & cakes were not long in dissapearing. It was great change after Bully & Hard tack for a few days. The cocoa also went away in quick time. I wish I could have written sooner because I know you would be looking for a letter.

Today we were given a bath and it sure was welcome. It was a month since the last one so I had quite a herd of stock to get rid of. My shirt nearly needed to be tied up at night so it wouldnt run away. It impossible to stay long without them so I guess I'll have a new breed in a few days.

How is every body at home these days. I hope you are still keeping fine. Did Dad get away for his trip to the coast O.K. I suppose Mildred would go back home with him. I was glad to hear that she was enjoying herself. Its a wonder she didn't get home sick all by herself. Have you heard from Uncle will or George lately. How are they getting on these days. I saw Hicks polloch today he is in the Engineers. He hollered to me as I was going for my bath. He walked along and we talked for a while. Gordon & Jack Polloch are both wounded so I havent seen them.

Well mother I havent much to write about but I just want to drop a line to say I was jake. I will close now with love to Hannah Charles Dad & yourself

You loving Son

John
