Dear Mother

Everybody being busy gambling this evening I thought I would take advantage of the quietness and drop you a few lined to let you know I am well and hope you are all the same

This time we are out of the trench for about 20 days for a rest which is certainly appreciated by us all as it breaks the monotony of a few days in the trenches and a few out.

Have just finished reading a bundle of papers which I received from you a few days ago. I also received the pairs of socks and mitts which you sent me the socks are o.k. [?] if you send some more mitts make them smaller but no shorter in the wrist as the longer they are the better. I was up to the Dentists today to have some work done. It is almost like being at home when one can have [?] such things as Dental work done with an army in the field.

Yes I receive your letters. One nearly every week. Got one yesterday from Addie and father.

The weather here is getting cold it freezes pretty hard at night now and we wish it would stay frozen as anything is preferable to the amount of mud we get around here.

There was a lively bombardment the other day and night and it was a treat to see the way our shells made a mess of the German trenches and they likely polished off a few Huns as well.

This afternoon I met a fellow named Stewart from Ch.'Town. He worked at [?] Stewart's and is in the 1st Battery C.F.

What does father think of the Torys winning Election.

I see You are still addressing my mail to Shorncliffe. I am now in No 1 Coy. 7th Battn 2nd Bgder 1st Canadians.

When we came over here we nearly lost our rank so my present rank is Private instead of Sergt.

I see by the Guardian a lot of letters from fellows out here and they certainly peddle a lot of stuff that no one but themselves believe.

Well Mother by the time you get this it will be nearly Xmas so I will close by wishing you all a Merry Xmas.

Write as soon as you can and let me know all the latest.

Good bye
Charlie

P.S. Now dont be surprised at me for asking for some money. We are only allowed to draw 30 francs ($6) a month so you see how short it keeps us. The remainder we will get when we go back. So if o can send me 6 or 7 dollars by register letter it will come in very handy.

Charlie
