Dear Mother

First a few lines to let you know I am well and hope you are all the same. Well, we had a very good rest and are now back on duty. The weather is very unsettled. It has rained a lot in the last week and things are pretty wet.

Last week I got a letter saying you had sent me a pair of socks & mitts and you did not know whether I had got them or not you see it takes quite a long time for you to get an answer to a letter from here. I got them all right. You said you were sending some more socks & mitts. Don't send socks more often than every six weeks and as far as mitts I have plenty now as we have been issued with plenty for quite a long time but I will tell you one thing we all appreciate and that is things to eat such as cake & chocolate. There are no places to buy much here so if you send our parcel again never mind anything but eatables. So far the weather is very much like BC in winter but more water . The country is very level, something like the prairie. When we are in some of our billets we line in shell proof dugouts. We have had only a couple of nights frost yet but nearly everyone would like to see the ground hard for a change. Well I think that is about all for this letter so I will close

Wishing you a Happy New Year

Charlie
