Dear Violet:

Received a letter from you and Grace last night just after coming in off working party. They came through pretty quick because they were addressed correctly I guess. I don't think mother has her's addressed right and that is why I do not receive her's very often. I do hope you have those Christmas boxes addressed right as I am looking forward for one every night now. When we were out of the trenches this last time I received an Overseas cake from Uncle Jack and a nice box from Grace. I wrote to both of them. Art also wrote to me. I will have to write to him to-day I suppose. I am writing this letter in a cellar of one of the many demolished villages. The cellar is the only place left untouched by those night little things called shells. When we were in billets last time out we were given our Christmas pay of seventy francs and we sure did live pretty high on canned peaches and condensed cream for a couple of days but I am living on the government again now. Send a little peanut butter now and again as I like it very much. This will be all this time

Love to all at home.
Jay.
