France,
September 3rd, 1916

Dear Mother:

Just al line today. Received your letter of August 6 a few days ago. We have moved ahead a mile and a half since I wrote you last and are busy digging in. We will finish our dugout this evening. It is all done now except covering over. Have just finished dinner and am writing while resting. Was out over the line this morning to see that it was in good shape and got in about nine. This is a big day here. There was a tremendous bombardment on all morning and the infantry are going over now. If they capture what is expected of them it will mean another move perhaps in a couple of days' time and certainly in a week. Am feeling fine. Haven't had a day sick since coming to France. The fellows are all well and in the best of spirits. We have been working pretty hard since coming to France, three months ago Friday, but will soon have it easier again. In fact our work is much easier now than it was at first.

Had a letter from Claude and one from Nelson McEwen the first of the week, neither of which I will be able to answer for a few days.

Will write again in a few days. Don't know if you will be able to read this. Must close now and get to work.

Love to all from your loving son, Harold
