Dear Miss Lola,

Thank you for your letter. I am sorry that I put you to the pain of writing it but it had to be. Perhaps I almost guessed what your answer would be and that fear has kept me from bringing things to a crisis sooner. It is difficult to analyse one’s own feelings and motives correctly at times. Still I suppose hope is born of desire and I do not pretend that the disappointment is not real nor hard to bear. The world seems a pretty empty place just now but I do not wish to burden you with my feelings. I suppose these things will happen as long as the world endures and one must make the best of it. I am glad that you wish our friendship to continue and that I may still write to you sometimes. I shall try to carry out your wishes.

My Father and Mater are staying in London and it is very good to have them here. They arrived last Tuesday and will not be leaving until next Wednesday or later. I have a pass to London from noon to midnight daily so that I may visit them.

I wish I could either get out of the army altogether or back to France. Some really interesting work or the excitement of the front line would help to take my mind off other things. I am afraid there is very little chance of the latter prospect but am expecting a board in a few days so shall soon know my fate now.

Yours very sincerely
Arthur L. Turner
