Diary

July 4 - Sad news came to the whole camp. Col. Williams had passed away at 9:15 a.m., unconscious to the last. At about 10:30 a.m. his remains were laid out on a bier on lower deck of the boat and the regiment moved past it in single file to have a last look at the man who had led us, beloved by his men, and who was held in high esteem by the whole garrison. During this time our boat, all four river boats, were moving down the river towards Battleford; all five regiments on board, camp equipment and baggage; the teams taking the trail and traveling light.
