Dear Mother: -

Having arrived at the battalion headquarters from the base yesterday, a few lines will let you know that I am O.K. It was a slow journey from the base, as we spent three nights in a box car on the way, but finally landed, and marched 8 or 10 miles to where I am now.

It is quite a pleasant looking part of the world to be in here, much better than where we were last time I was with the battalion.

At present I am sitting in a large hut that is occupied partly by men who are on duty out of the trenches, but chiefly by noise issuing from bagpipes which some patriotic Scotchmen would call music. Some members of the pipes bands are evidently preparing for the return of the battalion from the trenches.

I am going to join the battalion tonight and shall write again later when I come out.

I have met a few here whom I knew before, but a little later I shall meet more of them.

I had expected to find a good deal of mail waiting for me as I have not had any since I left England but it may be that it has gone to the company to which I belong. By the way as I am in No 2. Company it might be just as well to include that in my address so as to insure my letters reaching me more directly.

It is very quiet on this part of the line so do not worry about me.

I must close, with love to all at home.

Affectionately,
Douglas.
