My Dearest

I was delighted to receive your dear letter to-day. It is dated July 9th, they must have been holding at the Section for about a week. We are still with the Battery & they have not been very obliging with our mail, this is the first bunch they have sent through since we came up here. We are still at work on a new position, it will be a regular battle position when we get it all fixed up.

You have no idea how much work there is to make a place anything like shell-proof. I can tell you we did not feel very comfortable the first few days, but it is pretty safe now, we have some swell dug-outs. The shelling will have to be extraordinary heavy to take any effect. I guess we shall be going back to the Column in a few days.

From what I can see, I think I would rather be in a Battery than stay with the Section & I am undecided whether to apply for a transfer. If I don't land another good job soon, I think it would be better in a Battery.

Your Capt. is very fortunate to be sent to America, I hope your new O.C. will be just as nice.

We are losing track of outside news, I have only seen one paper since coming here, & that was six days old. Leave is stopped for the time being, but we expect it will open again soon. I have not heard anything of Legay lately, I wonder if he has left Winnipeg yet. He ought to be in England by the time I get my leave, I guess they don't get so much training in Canada these days.

Dearest, how did you manage to catch a cold at this time of year? I do hope you are quite well again by this time. Our solitary piece of candle will be burnt out in a few minutes so I must say Good-night Dearest

Lots & lots & lots of love & xxxxxxxx
