Dear Mr. Reid,

Doubtless you have been notified long before this date of the death of you son, our comrade, Sgt. D. Spencer Reid and have in a measure become resigned of it, but, as Spencer was a chum of mine and was such a good boy, I consider it my duty to write to you and offer my heartfelt sympathy to you in your bereavement.

Spence was liked and respected by every man in "C" Company and was a good conscientious N.C.O no matter what danger he was exposed to. It will perhaps he a comfort to you to know that there was no cleaner living man in the battalion than he was and his loss is felt by ever one from the C.O. down.

In the battle in which he gave his life he did great work and was walking over the top to see that his men were properly posted when he fell.

Donnie has taken the position of Company clerk and will be much better off than he was because he will not be in the line so often.

Trusting you are in good health and not suffering to much from the ill news.

I am sir, yours respectfully,
R. MacGillivray
