(This is my first attempt to write since I was burned - I do not know if I will be able to write a letter; I hold my pen with thumb and first finger only.)

My Dear Dorothy,

I was very glad to receive your letters

I am recovering from the burns very were all sent to same hospital. One has already been sent to England, the other is still unable to get out of bed, tho' he can sit up and is healing fast.

I don't know my dear people that you would have been any happier had I told you that I was not where you thought I was all year, seeing that we were rushed thro' England without getting the usual leave granted to Canadians

Long explanations are not advisable in letters written in france.

Thanks very much for your offer to send me a parcel but I really do not need anything, tho' I would like a chunk of cake about New Year. That is something you seldom see in "this man's country".

The light has failed (my eyesight is still rather weak) and the pen is poor so I will quit now but I will attempt to write again in a few days.

I remain
Your affectionate
Brother
