This is one of those city streets that go through what was once a gate in the city's outer wall. That of course was long long ago when people had to build their towns inside a strong fort.

This picture is from the outer side of the wall with an arrow pointing to the Westgate. Parts of this Wall are just as they were when the Pilgrim Fathers left here and that wasn't yesterday.
