Dear Mr. Platt:

It was with deep regret that I learned yesterday morning from Professor Mavor the sad news of your son's death. Few of those who have left for the front have had a finer record or better worldly prospects. His death is a costly sacrifice on the part of this country, but to you and your family its meaning can only be known in its personal bereavement to its full extent. From the University we have lost so many fine men,-three in the last few days-that the terrible nature of this war is coming home to us with acute sorrow. However I believe most firmly that life like your son's given for a noble cause is most worthily spent and that it leaves an abiding result in the life of the world. Above that is my Christian belief that his own life is kept safe and that his noble service here has fitted him for an even nobler service in a higher life that is unseen to us.

With kindest regards end deep sympathy, I am
Yours very sincerely,
Robt. A. Falconer.
