Dear Madam,

It is with the deepest sympathy and regret that I write to tell you that Lieut. H. E. B. Platt made the supreme sacrifice early this morning. He, together with Ptes. Lambert and Johnson, were conducting a reconnaissance between the lines and at about 12.30 a.m. was shot in the head by a German. Company Sergeant Major Harvey and Sergeant Nottingham came to their assistance and carried Lieut. Platt in. He lapsed into unconsciousness almost immediately and remained that way until he passed away at about 5 a.m. He will be buried in a military cemetery at a locality of which you will be notified later.

Lieut. Platt was one of the brightest, bravest young officers I have ever met and had endeared himself to all ranks by his estimable qualities. He was serving as Intelligence Officer and the work he was performing was very valuable and was much appreciated by higher authority.

Lieut. Platt did a man's work and has died a hero's death in the defence of principles which he held dear, and the heartfelt sympathy of all his comrades is extended to you.
