My Dear Mother:-

I received your very welcome letter today written June 8th; and sure was delighted to get It. I am resting in billets and at the time your letter arrived I was still in bed. We arrived in billets early in the morning after a long and wearisome march. A good dish of stew and tea awaited us when we got in and it was close to supper time before we got up.

Well I am glad you are all well at home again and may say that I am in the best of health. I hope the garden is a big success and I’m sure you must be having good weather now.

I suppose there was a lot said about us being split up alright, but I’m afraid thats what will happen to all the others coming over. Col Murray is a Big General in England now but as for Major McLean and the rest of them I’m sure I don’t know what’ll happen them.

Our band is still at Shorncliffe and it is the garrison band there I beleive. All the talk you heard of us is rot for if men are wanted over here they just take them from wherever they like in England.

I suppose there are lots going on their summer holidays just now. Well things will be slow at the beach this summer I bet. Im glad you went down to the country, why didn’t you stay longer?

It must be quiet about St Andrews alright. I wish it was the same here I’d like to tell you about it but you know the way it is.

Did you get my hanky alright? What did you think of it? The parcel for me has not come yet but it will be along in a few days I guess. Anytime you want to send that along hop to it. You want to keep an eye on Stan now and the same with the rest. You remember what Mr Brown said. Well it is close to nine thirty so I had better close with love and best regards to all I am your loving son
