Dear Mr. Irwin.
Received your welcome letter dated 25 July about an hour ago, many thanks, so thought I had better write before going out on patrol.
Was out last night for 7 hrs in the hope of getting a german patrol but had no luck. Will get them before long with luck its quite a lively job & one has to be very careful in regard to crawling around.
You seem to be having high old times with the scouts, good luck to them.
Weather is very miserable at present still it will brighten up in time.
Cannot write much now as I have to be out in a few minutes, but during the next week will write you, a good long descriptive letter worth while so will close with best wishes to you & yours
From your friend
