"I was quite close to a man called Steele (14. 4. XVI?) when he was hit in the head by a shell, and killed absolutely instantaneously, early in the morning of July 8th at Vimy Ridge while we were in the line. The Germans tried to come over, but we repulsed them, and they did not get into our trenches. He was probably buried near the dressing station at Vimy, but I have not seen his grave. He formerly belonged to the Irish Rangers. I thought his number was 919--- but possibly he was transferred"
