Letter from Pte. W. Thomas

France, Sept. 16, 1915.

Dear Mother:
Will try and write a few lines to-day. I am feeling fine. The weather has been fine, but we expect to have lots of mud later. We came out of the trenches on Monday night. Got to our billets at about midnight. We do our traveling from the trenches at night.
Fat, Tommy Faught and myself went down to have a chat with Claude Kennedy yesterday. He is looking all right. We arrived back in time for eight o'clock roll call.
We heard the second contingent were all in France. We do not know what the next move will be. Some say we will be going back to England. Other say we will not. They expect the Germans are going to make an attack along our line. It will be good bye to Old Fritz if they do. I would like to explain our trenches and barbed wire entanglements but cannot do so. The trenches we were in the last time were nice and clean, but rather small for four. Two men are supposed to be on duty while the other two are sleeping. We were only on duty at night. We have very little drill while in the trenches. You would laugh to see us diving into our trenches like a lot of rabbits. We will have been in the trenches two months on the 18th. Time is flying. Thins will have to move quickly if the war is to be over in October. I am sending you some souvenir post cards. Some class to post cards in this country.
Billie.
