Belgium - Mar 7 #91239 Dear Aunt Sahra I feel I owe you a very sincere apology for my carelessness in sending you a letter without the postage. As you probably know, stamps are not required for our letters we send home & quite unthinkingly I sent yours off the same. I was very pleased indeed to get your ever welcome & kind letter a few days back & very glad to know your harvest has been so successful. I can quite understand your position & can realize what a help it will be for you. Father writes very frequently & seems to be getting along very well as is also Violet & Willie. We have been out here nearly 7 weeks now & have been doing some very good work being complimented by our general for steadiness & accuracy in firing. Romance has completely gone out of civilized warfare & it is mostly hard work & mud. Nevertheless it is very interesting & at times very exciting especially when "Old Fritz" is "straffing" & starts throwing some of his "big ones" at you. At first you feel a bit queer but get quite callous in time although you may be in great danger. We are having a few snow storms lately it does not last long but the mud is very bad indeed. We are all anxiously awaiting the result of the bit battle at Verdun it will no doubt have a great influence on the duration of the war & we are hoping naturally it will be a complete defeat for the Germans. We are not allowed very much time to write. So I hope you will excuse my briefness & try & reply again very soon. With Kindest Love & Regards Remember me to all Your Loving Nephew Arthur 21st Battery C.F.A. 6th Howitzer Brigade C.E.F. France C/o Army Post Office London
