Dear Jessie

Well Jess I jess guess its about time I dun gone and went and wrote you one of them ere things they calls a letter. Its a long time since I last wrote to you but its also a long time since I got one from you or any one else for that matter. There has been a mail in to the Batt since I got hit for Bert Dickey wrote me that he had got a lot but at the Batt they mark it hospital and shoot it on. Just now there are numerous hospitals one place and another in Eng. and France so its hard to say where it may get to. They say there are hospitals in England but they seem very backward about sending some of us over. No they are very particular and careful and they wont allow any knee cases to go inside of a month after they get hurt but my month is up on the 3rd so I should not be long now. My leg gave me a terrible amount of pain yesterday and last night and sent my temperature up a little again but it is easy again today so I expect it will come down tonight again. The nurse discovered the cause this morning and put a stop to it so that I feel like myself again. I guess though that my days for football dancing or anything real frivolous are done . The dancing part doesn't bother me for I was done with it anyway but I would like to help Biggar get even with Perdue at footer. Never mind Jess I'll take you to a few dances yet and be a wall flower myself.

Well how goes things in the store. How is the young bookkeeper getting along. I don't suppose she has been out over a few thousand on my accounts yet. Never mind old girl you are doing fine and helping out at home like a trump and heres a boy won't forget it in a hurry either if I ever get a chance to get back to old Biggar.

Gee this is some burge we are in you can't get anything in the line of sweets to eat at all. They give us no money and leave us to depend upon charity. There is a charity fund that is supposed to supply us with cigarettes or sweets, but they have only had chocolate once since I came and the cigarettes are no good to me so yours truly just has the meals to look forward to. I'd much rather they would pay us a wee bit of cash and not leave us to charity. One can't even get enough cash to buy a daily paper or if we want to send anything but letters home we can't buy a stamp to do it. Some system,
(Remainder of this letter is lost.)
