Dearest Arfa:

Here I am in Wakefield and in the dearest old house I ever saw in my life. It looks just like an old picture and has a beautiful garden which you would rave about. It has a high stone wall all around it and trees planted against the wall and looks as if it should be very thrilling when blossom time comes and again when fruit time comes. I have a nice big room with a roaring fire and a great bed mountains high that I am just longing to have a sleep in though it is just seven o'clock. The first picture I saw in the room was my pet Madonna, a small one like ours at home and framed almost exactly the same. I do wish you were here to enjoy it all with me - you would rave about the garden. There is a little bunch of snow drops out - the first I have seen. Everything is very backward this year because it has been so cold everywhere.

I am to meet Aunt Emily and Ethel and Florrie and Dolly and I'm promised several good times - I hope Aunt Edie and I manage to get on alright so that I can really enjoy this beautiful place for the next ten days or two weeks. We are to do a lot of gardening, or play at it anyway and I feel that I ought to enjoy it all. If only, as I said before, you were here too. It is so funny being where you were a little baby and falling down steps etc.

We had a nice journey coming up. The fields are beginning to look like spring and there was a lot of little lambs frisking about. Also I saw a lot of pheasants strutting about so proudly in the fields.

Goodnight dearie heart - I wish you were as comfy as I am but I hope you're as comfy as possible anyway. All my love and kisses darling heart. Your little pal, Alice Leighton
