Diary

Monday September 18, 1916

Every day brings its quota of German prisoners down the chalk pit road past our artillery. Our lads would walk alongside them hollering "souvenir" in their ears and grab their hats or cut the buttons from their coats. As a rule, the Germans were like frightened sheep and were very passive under this ordeal.

Today is a replica of other days of the drive, a ceaseless bombardment, and a relentless advance.
