Dear Father,
I have had eight days leave and been up to Scotland and have enjoyed myself in general. I met all aunties and uncles; all but Uncle John - he lived too far away. I met Willie's widow and little girl and Mr and Mrs. Sharp in Motherwell. I spent a day in Edinburgh with Aunts Nellie and Annie. We went through the Castle and St. Giles Cathedral. I seen the place where Jennie Geddes threw the stool, the Flower Clock, Forth Bridge and Princes Street Monuments, etc. I also spent a day on Leavenseat. I seen the smithy and joiners shop where your big trunk was made. I met a man name of Henderson who knew you fine, better known as Carter Bob. I also found out that you were known as the plough boy ... [fragment]
