London, August 29, 1916
Dear Jeanie,
Just a few lines to let you know I am keeping well and that I have been up in Scotland all week and had a good time. I met all my uncles and aunties, all but Uncle John. He lived too far away. They are all very nice, and so are all our cousins. I also met Mr. and Mrs. Sharp and visited father's boyhood scenes - Leavenseat, Edinburgh Castle, St. Giles Cathedral, Forth Bridge, and Glasgow. They are all very good to colonial troops in Scotland. I only wish father had been with me; they would all like to see him so much. Aunts Nellie and Annie took me pretty near all over. Grandfather and grandmother are a very good-natured old couple, and both are very active. Grandfather works every day at the pithead, that is, at the mouth of a coal pit. I will close now as I have to get a train at London Bridge. Where London Bridge is and how to get there I do not know. This is an awful town to get lost in. I'll close hoping this finds you all well as leaves me.
Your affectionate brother, Ronald #157629 P.P.C.L.I. Hut 14 Shoreham-by -the-Sea, Sussex, England This place is only 6 miles from the great seaside resort, Brighton. Some town!
