My Dearest Mother,

Another week gone and I am still here putting in the time sans money sans friends and striving my best to get along & get fat. My chief correspondant is the chief Pay Master still we manage to write each other an average of one letter a day.

On Friday & Saturday I was acting as counsel for a private who was being tried by Court Martial for stealing. Unfortunately for him I could not get him off though I did my best and was congratulated by everyone who heard the case including the president of the Court and the other members. The Pres even went so far as to report my efforts to Division H.Q. who as a consequence called me up. hope to have more of them. Geo is going to Lunnon for a month on a course and Chelsea Barracks & Major Rimmell expects to go to France next week. So there wont be any of the old boys here but me.

Major Simmons is now acting Lieut Col. The Batt'n went over at Passchendaele on Oct 30th & had some 200 casualties. About 210 officers - 3 killed.

There aint much to write about. I stay in Barracks mostly or go out for short walks. The hills here are too numerous & steep to make walking a pleasure & my old legs seem to get awful tired & my wind is mighty short. I am much too fat I guess.
