My Dearest Kate

At last I am writing you that long promised letter having received the paper today. My leg is going on as well as can be expected, but the doctor cheerfully informed me yesterday that it would at least be three months before I shall be able to walk with crutches. Guess I'll have to start right in again & learn to walk like a baby if I am to be on my back all that time. Rotten luck eh! Not to be in an English hospital with all kinds of visitors & good things to eat. Well dear I guess you were wondering what had become of me. I suppose you have had some of your mail returned to you before now. I wrote you a letter on the 22nd of April which I hope you got alright but we were called out in a hurry that evening so that I think some things must have been lost. It was a month ago on Sat since I was wounded & still my leg is painful at times. I had morphine several nights running to get any sleep at all I wonder what you are doing today dear "Victoria Day" I hope you will have a good time & that the weather in Victoria is as good as it is here no doubt you will think it takes these letters a long time to reach you but they keep them for 10 days before mailing them. Please dont send any papers on here dear as they wont let us know any news & the papers would only be destroyed. Have you finished your holiday yet I hope you enjoyed it & that the rest did you good dear. I don't suppose I shall be hearing from you for two or three weeks yet but I shall look forward to letters regular from you when they do begin to come in. We are only allowed to write four cards & two letters a month & I am sharing them with you & mother but you know dear if I could write you more I certainly would. Well dear I think this is about all there is to say now. Please remember me to all friends & say that I shall be limping back around Victoria but I hope the limp wont be too bad Heaps of love & tons of kisses XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
