Dear Mother

I received your letter of Oct 1st on the 25th and was very pleased to hear you are all well.

If the last letters you had were dated the 11th & 17th Aug. some must have gone astray as I have written every ten days at least.

I had Ethels card some time ago

Yesterday evening I got the socks you sent me. They are just what we will need a little later on. We get enough socks issued but they are not as good as the ones you send always be sure and make the feet long enough. The last letter I wrote I asked you to send me a couple of pairs of heavy mitts I thought I would just mention it again in case the last letter went astray.

Tell Dad I am not worrying any about coming out alright and it is not much use asking for news about the firing line as we only know what is going on in a very small area and of course it would not do to write it. You hear quite as much from the papers as I could tell you. I may say I have yet to see my firt German.

During out last turn in the trenches we had rather wet weather but one must take it as it comes. One thing I like about the front line trenches is that we can cook a few things to suit ourselves. The food we get here as a general rule is good. We are in billets for a few days for a rest - a genuine rest this time. Have any of Will Duffy's boys gone to the front. He would be able to supply a section himself with such a family as he has.

Well as there does not seem to be much more to write I must close by reminding you I am just as fond of fruit cake as ever I was - get it!

Write soon as you can and let know the latest.

Charlie

P.S. When you write put Private instead of Sergt on the envelope. We all lost our rank when whe came here. I received a bundle of papers last week
