Dear Emma

Yours of the 20th received. Glad Frank is back. I do not think it will do any harm for him to work for awhile. It may buck him up, for he certainly had gone stale. You do not yet give me the details as to how far he had failed in his exam, if in toto or in part. Have him write me a letter and explain. Also touch on his plans for the future. If during the war he feels like helping, after matter could be arranged to finish up.

It would be a good thing if he could finance himself. Encourage him to save, not entirely for the money's sake, but so that he would take matters more seriously and cause him to make better progress if he feels that he has personally gathered the means to complete his education. So encourage him to start a bank account and see that it is not directed for any other purpose whatever.

Wish Bessie many happy returns of the day. I am sorry I overlooked it. I always forget. If you would write all the birthdays on a card or something of the sort it might help.

May you all have a very Merry Xmas and a happy new Year, and love to all

Dad
