Diary

Sat. May 12 -

Weather now for the last two or three days has been very warm, almost sultry in daytime and cool at night. Worked a little at our empalement. In afternoon, I was aeroplane sentry for a while. Three or four German planes were in sight for two or three hours and had a good chance to observe our position as our men were wandering about too much. In evening for about two hours, we were rather severely shelled with shrapnel. The 7th battery on our left suffered even worse than we did, but there were few casualties. A couple of our men were bruised slightly by falling shrapnel and two or three in another battery severely wounded. An ammunition dump not far away blew up making a fearful concussion. It quieted down by 6:00 p.m. and was fairly quiet when ammunition waggons came in.
