Napier Barracks.
Oct 17/16.
Dear Mother,
Only a very short letter this time. Our course here ends this week and we expect that the exams will be pretty stiff.
Everything here is as usual. Our Battalion has been broken up, and what is left of us is attached to the 39th. Practically all our Subs have crossed. I suppose that you’ve heard that Norman Hattton was wounded, and Art Ackerman killed.
When I finish this course I expect to go back to the Battalion, and then will try for about a weeks leave to see a bit of the country. I have been thinking that I ought to have ordered a pair of [Carryans?] or shoe packs before leaving Canada. I wear 9½ D or E. but don’t know what other measurements are needed. If you could find out you might write and tell me. Also tell me the price.
I received a fine long letter from Elsie a couple of weeks ago. I’m afraid she’ll find it lonely out there.
I have no idea when I’ll cross. They don’t seem to need Captains now, and the few that they do need they get by promoting their own Subs.
Well, I must close now Mother dear. I’ll write a real letter in time for next mail. Goodbye for this time then.
Your loving son,
Grant Mowat
