My Dear Mother:-

Im sorry to say there is nothing much of interest to tell you of this time but being about a week since I last wrote thought Id first send off a few lines to let you know things are going alright. Eudora's letter, undated, but posted about Sept 16 arrived this week. I see she has kept a copy of it to endeavor to disprove anything I may say about it. However I wont find fault this time. She was speaking of send an enlarged snap of Mac and I smoking, to his Mother. Now I was just wondering if it would be quite right seeing Mac never used to smoke. I think Orvil would appreciate it more, if she were to send it to him. Yes I'll bear her suggestion in mind and when I get my commission and uniform I'll sure take a jaunt to a photographer and send you a dozen. Your letter dated Sept 29 also arrived this week and was glad to have such a fine letter from you. I had to laugh very ironically at your remark about getting different meals than in France. Why of course we do and I know it but Im managing a great deal better than I did for a while. Was interested to hear Fred Kusiar phoned. Where he heard Id been captured Im sure I don't know but he was always good at carrying tales before anybody else. Nothing more has been rumoured about going to Egypt to train so suppose it must be put down as just rumour. My mid term exam comes a week from today, I think I will do good that is I expect to pass. Then another month at this course and if successful will pass on to the School of Aeronautics. Had a letter from Walter Zeller this week from Detroit telling of the trip Eudora and Florence had and also how he was getting along. That is the first word Ive had from him since he left Canada. I hope the cold weather will not bother you this winter so much as before. I think if I were home now I could look after that old furnace better than I used to. Aunt Agnes in Glasgow is having hot water heating put in the house. I enclose her letter just to let you read it. At times I get very homesick here. I cannot quite explain it. The fellows in the hut are all Canadians and fine chaps but I think it may be this peace talk in the paper. At times Im inclined to believe it will soon end and yet from the way we know the Germans do things it is quite possible it could be continued years yet if they liked. However much as Id like to come home I would not enjoy myself in Canada knowing I had to come back again so would rather stay and finish it out. Well Mother will close this time "A wire has just come in saying Austria has asked for a separate peace." Perhaps it will not be so long now.

With kindest love to you all
Your loving son
John
